Blood testing is one of the most important tools we have to help us diagnose ill cats. If done regularly, we are even able to catch blood changes, which can indicate early stages of various metabolic disorders before the cat even shows any symptoms. When this happens, we are better able to help your kitty live a longer and happier life!
Cats are prone to many health conditions, especially as they age. A cat who drinks a lot of water could be sick with a number of conditions, and blood work could help us find the proper diagnosis and the correct treatment.
The turnaround time varies depending on whether the testing is done in the clinic or at our outside lab, Idexx. Generally, if the blood work is done in the clinic, we get the results the same day. If the blood is sent to Idexx, it can take 3-4 business days.
The most important thing you can do is to get your cat used to its carrier, as well as the car so that your cat is not stressed before it arrives. If our patient is not stressed then our task of drawing blood is much easier on both your cat and us.
We recommend blood work every couple of years for cats not in their senior years. Once your cat is over 9 years of age, we recommend yearly blood work to monitor for kidney function, thyroid hormone level and various other parameters.
We absolutely do.
